The koshas are the five energetic "sheaths" or "layers" described in the original Indian documents, known as the Upanishads, which represent the true Self (Atman) and the layers from the physical body to the most subtle layer of bliss.
The koshas form a progressive model that moves from the gross to the subtle and are often compared to the layers of an onion. Our yogic and Ayurvedic practices purify these layers, allowing awareness and connection with one's true nature.
Annamaya Kosha- (Food-Physical Sheath- Earth element)
The first layer and outermost and densest part of our existence, made up of and powered by the food we eat, and connected to our muscles, bones, and organs that form the physical body.
Pranamaya Kosha- (Vital/Energy Sheath- Air element)
The second layer surrounds and penetrates the physical body as prana, flowing through the 72,000 nadis (channels) and serving as the vital force responsible for breathing, circulation, and digestion.
Manomaya Kosha- (Mental sheath- Fire element)
The third layer, the middle sheath, encompasses thoughts, emotions, beliefs, memories, and perceptions. It acts as a bridge between the outer world and the inner self.
Vijnanamaya Kosha- (Wisdom/Intellect Sheath- All elements)
The fourth layer contains intuition, insight, wisdom, intellect, discernment, and higher knowledge. Within this sheath, duality exists, where there is a knower, the knowing, and the known.
Anandamaya Kosha- (Bliss sheath, ether/space element)
The fifth layer permeates and encompasses all sheaths, acknowledging the deep inner peace and joy of pure consciousness, free from thoughts, emotions, and bodily heaviness, leading to absorption.
