Vertigo

Vertigo is a medical condition characterized by dizziness, a spinning sensation, a whirling feeling, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), motion sickness, headaches, nausea, and potential hearing loss. It is generally caused by an imbalance in the inner ear or vestibular nerve.

Common Causes:

Labyrinthitis is an inflammation caused by viral infections affecting motion, position, and balance.

Vestibular neuronitis is also an inflammation of the inner ear caused by viral infections.

Cholesteatoma is a skin growth in the middle ear due to infections and can cause hearing loss.

Meniere’s is a build-up of fluid in the ear, which causes ringing and hearing loss and could lead to vertigo.

Benign paroxysmal vertigo occurs when calcium particles clump up in the inner ear, bringing imbalance.

Preventions for Vertigo:

Avoid activities that compel you to extend your neck if you have vertigo. This includes reaching up to grab things, looking down from high-located terraces, and being careful about exercises or workouts that trigger symptoms.

Ayurvedic and Vertigo

According to Ayurveda, vertigo (Bhrama) is linked to an imbalance in Vata and Pitta and is primarily involved with heightened stress and anxiety of Vata, which can cause this condition.  Ayurvedic treatments include a straightforward, mild, and light diet that avoids strong spices, including a whole grain sattvic diet, with meditation and yoga sessions to promote mental and physical relaxation.  It would be best not to use a pillow while sleeping to improve blood circulation to the brain.

Herbals for Vertigo

Ayurveda recommends Ashwagandha, Brahmi, Shilajit, Vacha, Guduchi, and Triphala.

Yoga for Vertigo

Many yoga postures improve balance, stimulate the nervous system, and significantly improve dizziness, coordination, blood flow, and strength, including all variations of shoulder stans and seated forward bends.  Empty bowl meditation and alternate nostril breathing practices and bhramari.
