Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is commonly known as “Indian Winter cherry” or “Indian Ginseng”. It is one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda, serving as a Rasayana, which is described as an herbal preparation that promotes physical and mental health.
It also falls under the category of adaptogenic herbs, which help alleviate stress and anxiety, improve mood and cognitive function, improve sleep quality, boost energy levels and muscle strength, support the immune system, and protect against chronic diseases.
Ayurvedically, its energetics are bitter, astringent, sweet, and heating in nature, with a sweet aftertaste. Its biomedical actions include anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antitumor, nervine, and mild sedative properties; it also acts as an analgesic, reproductive tonic, and antianemic agent.
