Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a versatile, aromatic plant used as a vegetable, herb, and spice, valued for its unique licorice-like flavor and health benefits. Fennel is a sweet, cooling vegetable and herb in the Apiaceae family, which includes carrots, celery, and parsley. It has a sweet taste and is cooling. It is classified as a sattvic spice, promoting clarity, peace, and inner balance.
Fennel is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties and is highly valued for stimulating Agni (digestive fire), relieving bloating, gas, acidity, and indigestion, and reducing burping and acid reflux. Chewing roasted fennel seeds after meals is a common practice to aid digestion, freshen breath, and relax smooth muscle spasms. It acts as a diuretic, flushing excess Pitta and soothing urinary tract discomfort; supports liver function, aids metabolism, helping detoxify the blood, and improves circulation, reducing swelling and pain. Additionally, it supports hormonal balance, lactation, and eases menstrual cramps and irregular cycles.
