During our waking hours, our minds are typically filled with a multitude of thoughts, both positive and negative. The mind tends to stay in a state of disturbance and distraction, leaving us scattered and unable to be present. Trataka (flame gazing) can end the mind's distractions, enhance our ability to concentrate, increase memory, and bring the mind into a state of supreme awareness, attention, and focus.
Flame Gazing (Trataka) generates energy. As the eye's lens focuses on light and heat, it transmits the information through the optic nerves to the retina, located at the back of the brain. This energy increases in the pineal gland, known as the "Third Eye," converting light into electromagnetic energy responsible for the entire body's glandular system.
Light a candle or ghee lamp, or find a comfortable seated position on a chair, bolster, or yoga blanket to maintain an erect spine. It ensures that the inner energy can flow smoothly through the subtle channels (Nadis) in the body.
As you begin the practice, take a few deep breaths and focus on the flame. As thoughts arise, acknowledge them and release them. If the eyes close, let your inner Self look at the flame, concentrate on its "image," and notice how it may change. It may glow brightly and grow dim, only to glow brightly again. It may change colors and size. Bring your attention to the space between and just above your eyebrows, the Ajna Chakra, and the third eye-pineal gland connection.
The practice of Trataka leads to greater awareness, a relaxed state of mind, enhanced brain wave function, and a deeper understanding of the Self, all of which contribute to enlightenment.
