Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is a type of asparagus native to parts of Africa, southern Asia, and Australia, and it has been used for centuries in Ayurveda for its medicinal benefits.
In Ayurvedic medicine, it has the energetics of being bitter and sweet, with a heavy and cooling nature, and a sweet aftertaste. It balances Vata and Pitta but can increase Kapha. Its biomedical qualities include being an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulator, diuretic, reproductive tonic, expectorant, and antibacterial.
It supports reproductive health, fertility, and lactation; soothes the digestive tract; aids digestion; benefits gastric ulcers; manages diarrhea; helps reduce stress and anxiety; improves sleep; builds muscle strength; boosts immunity; and balances hormones to relieve symptoms of PMS and menopause.
Additionally, it also belongs to the category of adaptogenic herbs, which help reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood and cognitive function, enhance sleep quality, increase energy levels and muscle strength, support the immune system, and protect against chronic illnesses.
