Smoothies

Smoothies are loved because, in most cases, they are easy and delicious alternatives for meals, but are not typically recommended in Ayurveda because they do not always support proper digestion, absorption, and elimination. However, they can be adapted by choosing ingredients following Ayurvedic food-combining rules for your constitutional balance.

Ayurvedic Considerations:

Ayurvedic Concerns and Cautions:

  • Ice & cold-frozen fruits/foods, which dampen the digestive fire and absorption processes.

  • Raw ingredients make them harder to digest and can harbor bacteria and yeast.

  • Frozen fruits lack Prana (life force) and diminish the quality of digestion and immunity.

  • Improper food combining hampers digestion and creates creates toxins: for instance, mixing dairy and fruit.

  • Using powders like superfoods can create clogging and reduce nutrient absorption.

Ayurvedic Suggestions:

  • Choose fresh, warm foods that contain Prana, which promotes immunity and digestion.

  • Using spices suited fir your constitution benefits digestion.

  • Soaking nuts or seeds overnight before blending will benefit digestion and elimination.

  • Adding cooked oatmeal, pumpkin, yam, or avocado brings groundedness to Vata and Pitta.

  • Including coconut water or aloe vera naturally adds electrolytes.

  • The addition of chai, flax, or hemp seeds will improve elimination.

Doshas and Smoothies:

Vata

Vata is cold, dry, and light, and cold, raw ingredients can cause gas, bloating, and poor digestion, so favor warmer, heavier, and grounding ingredients, including healthy fats and warming spices.

Vata Balancing Smoothie Example: Milk, dates, almond butter, cinnamon, and fresh ginger.

Pitta

Pitta is hot, sharp, and intense, so avoid acidic, sour, pungent, and spicy foods; opt for sweet and bitter tastes; and use coconut water or milk, and possibly rose water.

Pitta Balancing Smoothie Example: Coconut milk, peach, berries, rose water, fennel or mint, and hemp seeds.

Kapha

Kapha is heavy, slow, and benefits from light, dry, warming, and stimulating foods to boost energy and metabolism, favoring astringent fruits (berries, apples), ginger, and warming spices.

Kapha Balancing Smoothie Example: Apple and/or banana, coconut water, chia seeds, lime, and ginger.
