Hair Loss

Hair loss in men and women is called androgenetic alopecia. It’s caused by the hormone testosterone and its conversion into a DHT molecule. This alteration causes hair follicles to shrink, resulting in hair loss. Men have more testosterone, so balding is more common..

Men typically experience an M-shaped pattern of thinning hair, known as male pattern baldness. In women, thinning usually occurs all over the scalp and rarely results in complete baldness. Because hair loss is so common, it’s no wonder people turn to herbal remedies.

Ayurveda says the hair is directly connected to the body's Asti Dhatu (bone tissue).  Disturbances related to this tissue are associated with metabolism and the digestive fire in the body, which is governed by the Pitta dosha.  Many things can contribute to greying, thinning, or balding, including hormonal and nutritional deficiencies, high stress, and other diseases and medication complications.

A hot climate, excess intake of spicy, salty, and sour food, tea, coffee, alcohol, meat, and smoking can increase the pitta dosha. Overeating fried, oily, greasy, and acidic foods also aggravates the qualities of this dosha.

It is always suggested to determine your specific doshic imbalances and make lifestyle changes to find long-term solutions to your imbalances.   Applying herbalized oils to the head and massaging the scalp is a traditional Ayurvedic practice that has been used for hundreds of years to maintain a thick, lustrous head of hair.  Massaging the head stimulates the hair follicles and allows the deeply nourishing herbs and oils to penetrate the scalp, strengthening and thickening the hair at its roots.  As a bonus, massaging the head with oil calms the mind and promotes sound, restful sleep.

Traditional Ayurvedic hair oils include sesame and coconut oils infused with specific herbs that support the hair's natural health. These herbs lubricate and condition the scalp, nourish the hair shafts and follicles, promote new hair growth, and prevent flaking and dryness while bringing natural thickness, color, and shine. Additionally, they can help balance blood pressure, reduce stress, and promote relaxation and groundedness.
