Thyroid imbalances involve the malfunction of the thyroid gland, which regulates the body’s metabolism, energy production, temperature, and overall hormone balance. Diagnosis of thyroid disorders involves blood tests to measure TSH, T3, T4, imaging tests such as ultrasound, radioactive iodine scans, or biopsy of thyroid nodules.
Thyroid disease and imbalance result in overactive thyroid function, known as hyperthyroidism. This condition can occur due to Graves' disease, an autoimmune illness, and is associated with weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, sweating, intolerance to heat, irritability, and difficulty sleeping. An underactive thyroid is called hypothyroidism and includes Hashimoto’s disease, which is an autoimmune disorder associated with fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, dry skin, depression, cold intolerance, and joint pain.
