Vaginal dryness (atropy) is experieced by over 30 million woman according to the American Medical Association which is characterized by dryness, itching, burning, and irritation. This is common during and after menopause due to a decrease in estrogen production. It can be addressed holistically with diet, herbs, lubrication practices, enemas, and douches.
Ayurvedically, it is primarily associated with an imbalance of the Vata dosha, which governs dryness and movement in the body. When aggravated, this can cause dryness of the mucous membranes, including the vaginal lining. Secondarily, the Kapha dosha, responsible for moisture and lubrication, can also contribute to insufficient moisture. Furthermore, the depletion of Ojas (the essence of vitality and life) can be a contributing factor.
Lifestyle Modifications:
· Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water is crucial for overall hydration and vaginal lubrication.
· Manage stress with stress-reducing techniques, such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises.
· Abhyanga (oil massage) regularly with warm sesame oil, particularly focusing on the lower abdomen and pelvic region, improves circulation and nourishes tissues.
· Avoid harsh soaps and douches, as they disrupt the natural pH balance and exacerbate dryness.
· Panchakarma therapies are rejuvenating, and the practice of internal Bastis (enemas) is beneficial.
Dietary Recommendations:
Incorporate a dosha-specific food plan that includes moistening, nourishing, and Vata-pacifying foods, such as healthy fats like ghee, coconut, and sesame, along with foods rich in phytoestrogens, including soy, lentils, and yams.
